Riots erupted between police and protesters in Madrid



  Clashes broke out between police and protesters after thousands of Spaniards took to the streets of the capital Madrid to protest against controversial construction project .

A total of 11 people were reportedly arrested and many were injured when a demonstration turned violent Madrid on Wednesday ( 16/1 ) .
Protesters gathered in the Spanish capital in solidarity with the country's northern city of Burgos , who demand an end to the local government plans to change the way into the green lane highway .
Gamonal Burgos project in the district of the city is estimated to cost at least € 8 million ( U.S. $ 11 million ) .
Critics argue that the plan is to change the way waste money on when Spain suffered from the financial crisis .
Protests night in response to expensive project that began on January 10 in Burgos , has spread nationally in the harsh austerity measures in Spain .
Police have arrested about 40 people since demonstrations began , as also seen violent clashes in the northern city itself .
Hit by the global financial crisis , the Spanish economy collapsed into recession in the second half of 2008 , causing more than 26 percent of residents out of work .
Spain 's debt ratio has jumped from 40.2 percent of gross domestic product ( GDP ) in 2008 - the year when the economic crisis erupted European countries to 85.9 percent at the end of 2012 .
